In an attempt to make the city greener, Chennai Social Service a group of working professionals who use their weekends in social welfare activities has launched the SMS a sapling’ concept.
Just their way of making planting a tree in your house as easy as possible. It’s a simple enough process if you are interested in having a tree planted in your house, just sms 98940 62532.
The volunteers at CSS will then work with you on what kind of tree you need or want and what arrangements you need to make for the planting and then within the week, they’ll come over with the sapling.
“At our end, we have segregated the city into three zones,” says B Satish, executive secretary of CSS. “And we are already in touch with nurseries and eco organizations across the city which have saplings ready for disposal. Most of the places give us the saplings for free,” he adds.
CSS only plants shade-bearing and flower and fruit bearing trees. “We do not plant shrubs etc,” says Satish. And all the trees are Indian species. “There’s lots to choose from, says Satish. For instance, there’s Poongan’, propagated by the Forestry Department and which is a pest and animal repellent thanks to a bitter juice that its leaves give out. There’s Pooarasan’, which is a sub-species of the banyan and whose leaves make a whistling sound in the wind.
The Ashoka tree is supposed to be a favourite for apartments that are near arterial roads because it manages to be a sound barrier. Then there’s Badam’, which has bright green leaves that turn progressively pinker as the tree gets older.
“The volunteers will bring all the equipment required to plant the tree as well as a leaflet on how to care for the sapling. But if the sapling being planted requires any special manure or soil, the house owner will have to bear that cost. Most of our saplings though can grow on any soil in Chennai,” says Satish, who adds that CSS is in touch with Dr Srinivasan, a professor in the Horticulture Department of IIT Madras on type of saplings and maintenance.

Plant a Sapling
SMS a sapling’ is part of a CSS environment drive, which includes a documentary called En Per Maram’ ( My name is tree’), shot by R Sathyamoorthy, who volunteers with the organisation. The documentary, which was also launched along with the SMS concept on Sunday, features a host of Chennai’s celebrities such as tennis player Sai Jayalakshmi and director Balu Mahendra, asking people to help make the city a greener place. It will begin featuring soon on various television channels.
“When we plant the sapling at a house, we name the sapling after the owner of the house just to make them care more for it,” says Satish.
Awesome Guys…………..

Dear friends,
i am fr. singarayar ofm, a Catholic Priest, working in St. Sebastian Church, Madhavaram. I heard about the great service you do to the society. I belong to the Franciscan Order which was founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 12th century. He was declared the Patron Saint of Ecology by United Nations. He is the lover of the whole creation. He called the Sun – Brother Sun; Moon – Sister Moon; Fire – Brother Fire; Water – Sister Water; Wolf – Brother Wolf; Earth – Mother Earth. So he had a personal relationship with all the creatures in the world. We celebrate the Feast of St. Francis on 4th October. As everyone is aware of the Global warming, one can not forget St. Francis of Assisi who invited everyone to love all the creatures and to promote them.
I am a Franciscan myself…….. and I promote Eco friendly life-style. I would like to know whether you could provide me some saplings which i would like to distribute to my people under our Parish/Church on 6th November, as my Birthday gift to people.
Singrayar,
Appreciate your thoughts. Please contact Tiru at +919894062532
This is to inform all our friends that SMS-a-SAPLING an initiative started in 2009 has been well received and appreciated all over for the good work. Earlier we were giving saplings at a subsidised and at times free of cost from Isha Green Hands, but henceforth due to improved consciousness about the deteriorating environment and support to protect the environment we will be charging saplings as per the charges at Isha Green hands nurseries. All nurseries are managed by a dedicated work force hence the money generated goes to their livelihood.
Kindly continue to support this initiative as we need to make up for fast depleting green cover across Chennai. We still continue to support sapling distribution at Marriages/ celebrations and community gatherings. Gift a sapling for a better tomorrow.
Thank you very much for your very kind cooperation & support.
Keep smiling
Chennai Social Service

SMS-A-SAPLING – Important Notice – Read Me First!
====================================
Intense heat is a major enemy to newly planted trees. But lack of water for their root systems is another. April, May, June, July is not the best planting time.
In general, the best time for planting trees is late winter or early spring. Summer’s a bad choice, because the weather’s too hot and the actively growing trees too susceptible to damage.
We need to water them sufficiently. The summer heat presents too great a threat to trees.
Due to summer heat, the ground is frozen. Trees are not able to access water, so it is important that we are watering our/road trees as necessary.
For your kind information, CSS-ECG is decided to stop “SMS-A-Sapling” from April to July.
During this time, will do a follow up for the previously addressed requests through email or visiting directly.
If we do not receive a response from an initial follow-up email, we may want to write a second email. Include a copy of the previous follow-up email… until we get response…………..
for further details contact: CALL to 98940 62532, 9840661732.
Thanks & Regards
Tiru
